5 Tips for Building Good Business Credit

5 Tips for Building Good Business Credit | At some point, your small business may need to borrow money to grow. That means you'll be sitting down with a loan officer or applying for credit. Without a good business credit score, chances are slim that you'll get the funding you need.

Lendio, an online lending platform that connects small businesses to suitable loans products, has been very successful in helping entrepreneurs and start-ups in finding loan products. In fact, the company claims it achieves a 60-70 percent success rate in helping borrowers get the loan or financing they need -- versus a mere 10 percent for local banks -- by casting a very wide net for financial products.

The company matches eighty-five percent of borrowers that use Lendio to at least one borrowing option. What about the other 15 percent? Lendio CEO Brock Blake chalks it up to businesses with "bad credit" or, in some cases, start-ups with only "little bit of a track record."

Build Your Business Credit Score
To avoid falling in with the 15 percent, consider these five small business tips to establish business credit and to build a great credit score.

1. Nothing Personal, It's Just Business
Being passionate about your business and taking a very hands-on approach to its operation are typical entrepreneurial traits -- nothing to be ashamed of. Just don't let those strong connections with your start-up or small business bleed into your personal financial affairs, and vice versa.

When it comes to money, you need to cut the personal ties between you and your company. Intermingling personal and business finances could have a detrimental effect on your efforts to build business credit.

Stop putting business expenses on your personal credit card. Quit paying for equipment and supplies out of your personal accounts. If you must pitch more money into your business, make it an official loan with legal paperwork that you can only file if you follow the advice in Tip 2 below.

2. Let Your Business Stand on Its Own
Register your business as a separate legal entity. Depending on how you want to structure your business, this might mean exploring these three types of business incorporation.

To apply for a small business bank account or line of credit, banks typically require an Employer Identification Number (EIN). You can head over to the IRS and apply for an EIN.

These steps not only help keep your financial house in order -- and contribute a healthy work-life balance -- but they will also help shield you from personal liability, depending on how you set up your business. That way, a financial mishap, whether personal or business-related, doesn't risk wrecking everything you've built for yourself and your employees.

3. Apply Already!
There's no use putting it off. If you want to build good business credit, you need to apply and get approved for a small business credit card or loan. Be prepared to share financial particulars and answer some tough questions.

If possible, start small. When your business establishes a history of modest borrowing and paying off those obligations, you improve your chances of getting funded when bigger expenditures loom.

Also remember to look beyond your local bank, and don't get discouraged if you're initially declined. As we mentioned earlier, Lendio helps small businesses quickly survey the borrowing landscape to improve their chances of finding the right loan product.

4. Pay on Time
It may seem obvious, but its importance can't be overstated.

The key to maintaining a good relationship with your creditors and building strong business credit is to pay on time. It tells them that your business is dependable and signals that it is run reliably. Conversely, a string of late payments can send interest rates soaring when it comes time to borrow again, or maybe even lead to an outright rejection.

Also, keep balances low. This not only helps keep debt manageable for you, reporting agencies take the ratio of used and unused credit (among several other factors) to determine your creditworthiness.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Credit
Finally, monitor your business' credit score. Fraud and business identity theft are reasons enough to stay on top of your credit. More importantly, using a business credit monitoring service like Experian or Equifax helps you determine if you're on the right track. They provide a critical perspective: how you look to lenders.

It's also just plain responsible.

You're always monitoring the financial health of your company, anyway. Knowing your business credit score, staying current with the items that appear on your report, and correcting them if necessary, are all vital to keeping borrowing costs low and maintaining easy access to funding for those times when you really need it.

Richard Branson's 5 Rules for Good Business

Richard Branson's 5 Rules for Good Business

Richard Branson's 5 Rules for Good Business | During a recent radio interview on the BBC, the host asked me what advice I would give to young people who want to start their own businesses. In the 46 years since I launched Student magazine, the world has certainly changed. The uncertain economic outlook and the relentless pace of technological advances make replicating Virgin’s success much more challenging for today’s young entrepreneur.

At Student magazine, we expressed our opposition to the Vietnam War and the Cold War; these days, governments now face the more nebulous threat of terrorism and instability in the Middle East and Africa. Back then, American and European markets were generally stable; today, the economic power of Western nations is being challenged by the fast-growing economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China, and growth opportunities and new markets can be found around the world.

There is also marketers’ new ability to bypass traditional channels -- TV, radio and newspapers -- and build a strong following online for their companies via Twitter, Google+, Facebook and new applications such as Path and Klout. This means that most startups are able to launch with smaller marketing budgets, and that entrepreneurs can break into new markets fast. It also means that successful companies must defend their positions, because their products can go out of fashion just as quickly as they caught on.

But during the radio interview I found myself arguing that while the world may be changing quickly, the steps to building a good business have not. The five simple guidelines we followed when we started the magazine and then Virgin Music remain as valid and useful as they were in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

1. If you don’t enjoy it, don’t do it. You must love what you do.
2. Be innovative: Create something different that will stand out.
3. Your employees are your best asset. Happy employees make for happy customers.
4. Lead by listening: Get feedback from your staff and customers on a regular basis.
5. Be visible: Market the company and its offers by putting yourself or a senior person in front of the cameras.

Virgin Media founded its Pioneers program to promote aspiring business people and help them to network. One of our best known pioneers is Jamal Edwards, the founder of SB.TV, an online music and lifestyle channel, whose company and business model remind me of Virgin’s in our early days.

When Edwards started out, his company was just himself and his camera; he started posting videos of rap performances for his online followers. He was doing what he loved, and soon he developed a cult following for his passionate, innovative and authentic early videos of musical events.

Once he had established a brand and a following, Edwards and his team extended SB.TV’s reach into more areas, including music and lifestyle, merchandise, clothing and even a record label. Traditional brands like Puma and Nando’s (the fast-food chain) started calling, wanting to discuss deals and endorsements.

Edwards has also made his own luck by spotting talent. In 2010 a struggling singer-songwriter sent a video to SB.TV that was accepted and placed on the company’s YouTube channel. The views kept racking up, and eventually the rapper Example offered the unsigned young singer a chance to tour with him. This was none other than Ed Sheeran, whose career was effectively launched by SB.TV.

Edwards remains very busy and very visible, promoting SB.TV and himself wherever he can -- on his website, in partnership with Google Chrome and in the media, he tells the story of his company and their dreams and successes, getting the message out. And he knows that good business depends on backing your people and being a good listener. Despite his early successes, he remains down to earth, always willing to listen and constantly trying new ventures.

If you have the right idea and execute properly, your startup’s launch date does not matter. While the business environment has changed, the basic rules remain the same. Rather than getting nostalgic about how things used to be, embrace the new opportunities and challenges available to you now.

The Scoop on Marketing - 6 Tips for a Successful Business!

on Wednesday 20 March 2013

The Scoop on Marketing - 6 Tips for a Successful Business! In business, marketing is the key to survival. Marketing takes a lot of planning, organizational skills, budget measures and timing. Proper planning and accountability measures will enable you to position your business for success. To ensure maximum ROI (Return on Investment) of your marketing plan, these are 6 tips for a successful business:

The Scoop on Marketing - 6 Tips for a Successful Business!

1. Update Your Marketing Plan

If you are planning to expand your business or wish to give it a directional turn, then it is important to update your existing marketing plan. With a well thought out marketing plan, it becomes easier for a business owner to systematically promote the company.

In addition, it is imperative that marketing collateral such as business cards, logo, signage and promotional material are in alignment with your overall message.

Updates to your plan should be based on careful assessment of the market, understanding the needs of the consumer and consideration to the objectives and outcomes of the plan.

2. Create a Marketing Budget

Marketing is crucial for business success. For every marketing plan to reach its full potential, it is vital that a budget is in place. Allocating too little capital can be a detriment to your future goals. For example, a new business that calculates start-up costs for business cards, logo, flyers, a website and custom shirts, etc., is a smart move.

In addition, a business owner should follow a goal-based budgeting plan; one that includes customer service initiatives, communication, and all prospecting activities.

3. Implement a Marketing Campaign

A marketing campaign includes several activities carried out to accomplish a pre-planned goal; generally the promotion of a product or service. To see how well a marketing campaign works, consider planning it as a 30-day or 90-day trial to avoid unforeseen losses. By running it for a short period allows you monitor the feasibility of the plan with your target market; set clear campaign objectives; and plan the outcomes accordingly.

Successful campaigns are carefully researched and centers on details and implementation, rather than on a single, big idea.

3 Memorable Marketing Campaigns:

"Just Do It" - Nike
"Where's the Beef?" - Wendy's
"Absolutely, Positively Overnight" - FedEx
4. For Heaven's Sake... Find FREE Marketing Opportunities

When you want to reduce your marketing budget, it is essential to take advantage of free marketing opportunities. With so much impetus being laid on web-based marketing services, you can find a multitude of free PR on the internet. There are numerous press release and article submission services, Google and Yahoo local listings, online directories and similar services to create company profiles and promotional opportunities.

5 FREE Offline & Online Ideas

Social Media Networks - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Foursquare, Google+
Guest Blogging
Customer referral program
Public speaking
Business Network Group - online and offline
5. Ask For Referrals

Referrals... a powerful selling tool! To be introduced to a potential client through a personal recommendation is GOLD! Asking your clients, associates, partners or consumers for referrals is a cost-effective way of expanding your network. People do business with those they know, like and trust. So, the best compliment you can earn is from those who like your product or services.

There are also fee based referral programs that provide extensive leads to specific consumer markets.

6. Always... Always Follow Up!

Last but never the least, always follow up! A follow up process is extremely important in securing business from new clients and in maintaining rapport with existing ones.

Send a thank you note
Make a phone call
Email a greeting card
Mail a special gift
In business, there are no guaranties for success; however, incorporating these 6 tips will significantly improve your chances of having a profitable company.

Mystery Shopping for Airlines to Improve Customer Loyalty

on Tuesday 19 March 2013

Mystery Shopping for Airlines to Improve Customer Loyalty | Mystery shopping can be a beneficial way for airlines to gain objective feedback. Typically, airlines only hear from angry customers when a problem arises. When it comes to air travel, emotions run high.

Mystery Shopping for Airlines to Improve Customer Loyalty

Whether people are flying for business or pleasure, many travelers find air travel to be a stressful experience. Airlines have to go above and beyond to please travelers in order to encourage brand loyalty.

Many people are familiar with the bad publicity that can occur when an angry traveler takes to social media to complain about their poor experience with an airline. In fact, a simple search on any social network of any major airline carrier's name will produce a wide variety of consumer complaints being broadcast via the internet.

These can be everything from written complaints to traveler's actual pictures and videos of the problem. While these reviews shouldn't be discredited, this may not be an accurate picture of what most passengers experience.

While airlines may be very well aware of their most frequent customer complaints -- small seats, baggage fees -- getting into the mind of the consumer is not as easy. One of the best ways for airlines to gain insight into their customers' experience is through mystery shopping audits.

Airline mystery shopping is designed to give airline carriers insight into their customers' experience through an unbiased, objective pair of eyes. Not only is mystery shopping a great way for airline carriers to find out exactly what their passengers experience, and what sort of customer service is being offered, but it allows them to identify strengths and weaknesses, which can help them avoid a future public relations problem.

Furthermore, mystery shopping is a great way to reward exceptional employees, which in itself provides an incentive for other airline employees to treat every customer as a potential mystery shopper. When conducting an airline shop, mystery shopping professionals will evaluate the level of customer service offered by all airline employees they interact with during their flight, including those at the airport as well as in-flight.

Additionally, they will evaluate the look and appearance of the aircraft's interior, its cleanliness, the restroom facilities, and accessibility for disabled passengers. They can even evaluate the airline's meal options and service.

The wealth of data received from an airline mystery shopping audit can help airlines determine areas of weakness and strength in their operations; identify how their agents incentive program for employees; and, even develop new criteria for management performance and bonuses.

Mystery shopping is a better, more accurate indicator of how airlines are performing, as compared to focus groups, customer surveys, and social media complaints. For an airline looking for key performance indicators, consider working with a mystery shopping agency that can provide national or even international coverage.

Making Money Online Vs Money With A Traditional Business

on Sunday 17 March 2013

Making Money Online Vs Money With A Traditional Business | Making money online vs. making money in the traditional business or employee environment is really not all that different. The bottom line when it comes to making money is doing the things that cause money to trade hands. While this can be a variety of things with an endless range, one thing always happens. Value is created and value is agreed upon then money is transferred.

Making Money Online Vs Money With A Traditional Business

Any legitimate money making opportunity is going to have common characteristics or guidelines, if you will. First of all there are simple money making systems in our economy. Corporate America uses one money making system. Small business uses another legitimate money generating system. Non-profit en devours use yet another model for producing funds to cover expenses of projects.

Inside these general systems to make money there are much more intricate subsystem that make on business more competitive than another or let one corporation command more of the market share over another. There are target markets and marketing strategies and many other ideas that separate and define each unique system for making money.

Philosophy comes into play as well. When it comes to making money and the amounts of money that can be made, philosophy plays a big part. Things like how the system handles and values customer service and the ideas the company has about innovation and bringing new products to market.

One of the things that has happened recently with regards to making money online is advent of simple systems that create win-win scenarios for both the creator of a product and the people who market or distribute that product. Making money online is a growing trend here in the U.S. to say the least.

Selling information products and self help materials along with health and wellness products seem to be the most popular if you look around the Internet. One of the reasons these products work so well to make money online using the Internet is because of the ease in shipping these products.

Whether you are starting a new job, getting a promotion within a corporation or starting a small business there will be a learning curve. This also holds true for making money online. The one thing that is worth noting though, money making opportunities online have greatly reduced the learning curve and increase the money making potential.

Essentially there are only a few things to get good at in order to make money online. Number one I think is marketing. I say this for one simple reason. If you can get good at marketing you will always find great products that you can market and receive healthy commissions on. This can serve as a way to get started.

Creating your own products or getting exclusive rights to another online product is another skill that would increase your money making capabilities. do a little research into products you can use to create a good income for yourself.
Making Money in any business is the result of doing a few things well. Traditional Business models and online business models will both generate massive amounts of money is operated correctly. The main difference in the two models seems to be the money that goes into the entrepreneurs bank account rather than operating expenses.

Most business models you will find actually combine the two ideas taking the best of both worlds. The typically online entrepreneur is not paying for expensive real estate, equipment, employees, and things of that nature. While the work at home based entrepreneur is also getting tax benefits through home based write offs like interest deductions and home office space along with utility write offs.

Check back often I will be posting other tips on specific ways to create an extra income stream on line and ways to automate the process so your time investment is minimal.

Making Money From Home - The Basics

on Saturday 16 March 2013

Making Money From Home - The Basics | Have you ever thought about making real money from the comfort of your own home? Have you wondered how it is that seemingly so many other people can have success at it, but you have no idea where to start? Well, there's good news here. With a little bit of preparation and some serious commitment, you should have no problems getting started. There are a few things to keep in mind as you go about preparing for this exciting adventure.

Making Money From Home - The Basics

First, can you commit at least one hour a day to sitting in front of your computer? Second, are you able to work on your own, with little or no supervision? If you answered yes to both questions, then you are already halfway there!

The first thing to do is search for a program that you think you can handle and that sounds promising to you. Keep in mind that almost all of the sites that you visit are trying to sell you their product, so take what they have to show you with a grain of salt. If you think that something sounds promising, but aren't quite sure, bookmark it and come back to it later. It's that simple. Make sure that you read all the information that they are offering up.

Most of them will even offer some sort of free sample to wet your appetite. Read it, and ask yourself "Is this for me?". If not, keep searching. You don't have to take the first one that you find, in fact, it would be rather premature to take that first one.

Once you have downloaded your product, take the time to familiarize yourself with the information that it contains. If you have questions about it, there usually is either a help line or a forums area for you to ask your questions in. And you should ask questions. These people want you to succeed, because if you succeed, they do too! Once you are sure about how you are going to set up your product, make sure to follow the instructions carefully.

One mistake could cost you lost time, lost revenue, or both! Be patient. Your success will not come overnight. It will take time to build up a customer base and a reputation with those customers. With some hard work and dedication, you will be able to build an income stream that will serve you well in the months and years to come.

Do Your Customers Ignore Your Marketing?

on Friday 15 March 2013

Do Your Customers Ignore Your Marketing? We're all drowning in advertising messages! It's everywhere: people trying to get their products in front of you on television, radio, in the newspapers and magazines, through your letterbox, on every wall of public spaces, toilets, cashpoints, airport check-in terminals, taxis, trains, buses, on websites, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, at sports events, music events, on your mobile in apps or text messages.

Do Your Customers Ignore Your Marketing

It can be intrusive and is often poorly targeted. At best it reaches a few people who are already looking for the product, otherwise it is ignored by most and at worst it is actively rejected.

To get through this white noise created by the big corporates, the marketing for your small business has to be smarter.

The problem is that most marketing is designed to build awareness, create an open-ness to considering the products you provide, help product selection, create the desire to buy from you and then build loyalty to your business to encourage customers to refer others to you.

This is the "journey" you want to take people on.

However, this is not the journey people want to go on. They want a simple life, to have fun, make friends, enjoy themselves, relax, achieve more in less time, save money, have fewer hassles, forget their problems, etc., etc.

If you can create ways to help people achieve this so they go on your journey without even realising it then you're well on the way to cutting through the white noise of marketing that's out there.

To do this, your marketing first of all, has to be targeted. Which means knowing who your target market is, specifically. In the extreme this might be even a single specific person. Then you need to create useful messages for them, that you can get in front of them when their mind is on a relevant subject.

In other words, how can you integrate information about your products and services into people's lives in a way that improves their lives?

Here are four areas you can start to think about that might help:

1. Where could you put your message so that people see it when they are actually thinking about your product or something related. Get creative, like Zappos putting their shoe adverts on the boxes you put your shoes in to go through the X-ray machines. Or Starbuck's handing out hot drinks in the street on a cold day.

2. How can your product placement help people to create or improve their social lives? With friends, family, colleagues? Perhaps think Budweiser's "Whassa!" advert or the Old Spice and Bodyform YouTube videos. Gaming sites are doing this very effectively (rightly or wrongly) at the moment. You could do this simply by capitalising on gifting opportunities:

3. Could you create an informal club for people to belong to? The benchmark here is Harley-Davidson, Oakley or even Starbucks. How can you capitalise on people's tribal nature?

4. How can you tap into your target's emotions? The big boys do it with simple phrases like "Just do it", "Think different", "Don't be evil". Hook into positive emotions like the small T-shirt manufacturer that went viral with their "Life is Good" branding.

It's certainly takes much more thought and creativity to market yourself like this. Like any approach to marketing for small business, you should measure the results, and then you'll know if it's been worthwhile.

This information process should not be overlooked, and can play a pivotal role in laying the foundation for a successful online campaign. Today's technology can take much of the work and organize a return of high value information for you to find targeted sustained success.

Building your online presence from a starting point of a niche that fits you is the basis for your success. Online Marketing FAQ - How Quickly Can I Make Money Writing Articles?

Any of these questions sound familiar? In this article I'm going to share my own experience with turning content into CASH... and explore a fundamental difference you really MUST learn if you are eager to start earning an income online, and make it happen in a hurry.

Curious? Let's dive in and look a bit closer... immediately below.

Q: How long will it take to make money from writing content?

The truth is, it totally depends on the TYPE of content marketing you do. For example, if you write articles for directory syndication, you can literally be earning an income, and making sales... in a mere matter of hours or days.

BUT -

If by content marketing you mean building a blog, or writing PDF's, or even selling ebooks on Kindle for the purpose of both profit and lead generation, the length of time it will take you to earn a sizable income will be MUCH longer.

(note: this is a general rule and for reasons that extends well beyond the scope of this article - and applies to 99% of online entrepreneurs. Obviously if you have a HIGH traffic existing authority site that gets thousands of visitors a day, this equation will be a bit different, and you may want to approach this process a bit differently)

Here is how article marketing and content marketing differ:

When you write and submit articles (like this one you are reading) to the high volume directories, you are literally getting your content in front of tens, or even hundreds of thousands of readers in a very short time span. Because the article directories already have TONS of trust, and lots of traffic, you can "borrow" that trust for the length of time your content lives at the top of the recent results, often resulting in an AVALANCHE of traffic... literally overnight. (especially in the big niches that have evergreen interest like diet, dating, divorce, etc)

Whereas content marketing is a MUCH slower "slog"... especially if you are a relative unknown, or don't have an existing blog that gets much attention from readers, or the search engines. (and the big reason why many people give UP way too prematurely to boot)

Here is a quick example -

In a dating niche, a few years ago, I literally generated about 100 thousand new readers, totally part time... in about 30 days, simply writing articles. I used those articles to build a list of about 20 thousand people, who I could "talk" to everyday, via my automated email sequence.

However...

My blog in that same niche, over the same period of time... literally got like 75 visitors from the search engines. Similar content - but because I was brand new, if I was counting on THAT approach online to eat or earn money, I would have starved and gone broke before the month was out.

A well designed content marketing campaign, especially if it involves offsite syndication, will make you money within the first 7-14 days. Often even more quickly than that. The key is how you design your campaign - where you put your content first, and what you DO with your subscribers, after they sign up.
